Many of you in the US are trying to make a decision whether to risk playing at an online site that still illegally serves the US or take your shot at live play.  The safer play of course is to move your game into the live arena.  As such, here are a few tips for those just starting out in live poker play.

For many, it's time to get away from behind the computer screen and into the casino.
Pay Attention to Players on Your Left
Players will telegraph their actions at the poker table frequently.  Some players will get chips ready to bet or to call a bet from you on the flop or they may look at their chips when they hit the flop favorably.  If you are not watching your other opponents, you will not pick up on this information.   When I say look to your left, I am meaning to look at those that will acts after you.  Obviously that starts with your left.
Value Bet More Often
When playing live poker, you will find that your opponents as a whole will tend to be a lot weaker than those in the online game.  They will not be as sophisticated and may not even be aware of certain regular plays you will see online such as squeezing or bluff-raising.  If they are, many will either not use them or will use them very infrequently.
Your decisions at the turn and river should be easier as well.  Look to either be betting, checking, or folding if you are in position more often than controlling the size of the pot.  Don’t worry about small ball poker as often in lower limit cash games as value betting will usually win more money.
Don’t Telegraph Your Plays
When playing online, it doesn’t really matter if you are preloading your actions or clicking the check or bet buttons well before its your turn.  In live play, you are giving your opponents information that will help them to make better informed decisions when playing you.
Your best bet is to make the same movements and actions in each hand.  You may want to consider not looking at your cards until it is your turn and not even looking at your chips until it’s your turn to make a bet.  Otherwise, the astute players will use that information to save themselves money when you are ahead and take more money from you when you are behind.
Learn Patience

Due to the slower pace of the live game, some online players will tend to bluff at pots too frequently and risk having players play back at them. Yes, many of these players are bad and may not understand your plays, but after a time they will start calling your bets and then you will have consistently tougher decisions.  Pick your spots for your bluffs and fancy plays and use them a lot less frequently than you would online.
The key to all these tips is realizing that the game runs a lot slower than the online game, you have to focus more, and also you must adjust to playing just one table at a time.  While it may take some getting use to, with time you can make the adjustment.
