In the United States, poker players can’t play online poker. In fact, they can’t gamble online at all. However, if they go to a sports betting outlet in Las Vegas, they can place a bet on a player they think will win this year’s World Series of Poker Main Event. Some of the best odds will be on a couple of former United States online poker pros like Phil Collins and Ben Lamb. These are strange times.
For the first time ever, Las Vegas sports betting outlets are accepting bets on who will win the World Series even though online sports betting sites have offered the same action for years. What may be new are the potential Super Bowl-esque prop bets; Caesars thinks they will offer bets that include the colour of the first flop (red or black) and odds on the number of players the winner will eliminate. Not only that, horse racing fans will be glad to know exactas and trifectas could also be in play.
Odds makers set the chip leader, Martin Stazko, as the big favourite despite the mixed results of the big stack entering the final table in years past. The early betting odds correlate almost exactly to the chip stack sizes of the returning players. Ben Lamb, who has seen heavy action, expects to bet on himself and Vegas books are okay with that. The betting limits are set at or below the 10k buy-in so they are confident the players will not succumb to collusion with the prize pool being 100-fold bigger.
